Pat Moran of Moran Chevrolet was so thrilled that his 1969 Camaro ZL69 Custom was awarded a Great 8 Trophy today here at the 2019 Detroit Autorama. Few show car owners can imagine the tension that builds up when you know your car could be in contention for the Ridler Award. Only eight out of about thirty cars here at the Autorama make the Great 8 sponsored by BASF. It is an extreme honor to be so cited. He now knows he owns one of the top custom cars in the country.
Moran started off with a wrecked 1969 Camaro back in 2013. With parts from a 2012 Camaro donor car, he and Willys Workshop set out to build a custom Camaro they would call the “ZL69.” Here is an interview with Willy Peart, the owner of Willy’s Workshop in Port Huron, Michigan:
But this car was more than just another Camaro. They widened the rear wheel wells, chopped the roof one inch on the A pillar, grafted a Camaro SS roofline onto the car, made custom emblems and center caps, removed the roof drip moldings, and grafted a ZL1 carbon fiber hood insert in the hood. A stainless steel custom build fuel cell was installed. They even installed a spoiler with a 2019 Camaro high mounted stop lamp. They installed rack and pinion steering, a Moser 9″ rear end housing with billet aluminum hubs, and, of course, the 9″ Ford third member was added. The color is Victory Red Ditzler custom clear paint from their Vibrance Collection.
Here is how Moran’s ZL69 looked on Friday when the Great 8 award was received:
