Very Successful 2014 Bonhams Auction …
CARMEL, CA, August 17, 2014 — Saturday night there were more seven figure cars sold although nothing like what happened here on Thursday. Thursday night a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold here at the 2014 Bonhams Auction for $38.1 million. The high profile sale of vintage cars was held here on the Monterey Penninsula at the Quail Lodge Hotel and Spa in Carmel.

The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta is one of only 36 Berlinettas built from 1961 to 1964 by the Ferrari factory. The Ferrari was serial number 3851. The actual winning bid was $34,650,000, but with buyer’s commission included it will be recorded as a $38,115,000 sale. (The commission goes to Bohnams Auction Company for selling the car.) Cars On Line.com found out that the seller was not that happy. Even though this sale sets a new record for highest auction sale for a collector car here in the U.S., our sources tell us that the seller had been lead to believe he would receive closer to $50 million for the car.
It is said that this 1962 Ferrari GTO was the last one built of the front engine competition coupes by Ferrari. It has a 3-litre V12 engine. Since many of the 3-litre cars were converted to 4-litre for the next season of racing it is even more rare to find a 3-litre version still intact. Ferrari GTO’s won the FIA GT World Championship series in 1962 and in 1963. They were produced with work done by Maranello and in the Scaglietti body plant in Modena until the end of the 1963 season.
There already is big money being shown here during Concours Week as five big name auction companies will be selling top collector cars in the shadow of the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. Although the Concours is what brings most collectors to the peninsula on the Pacific Ocean this week, a number of top name auction companies are also here to ween buyers for their collector car offerings.
