Lakeland Winter Collector Car Auction

As the Saturday edition of the Lakeland Winter Collector Car Auction 2022 progressed into the early afternoon, a 1964 Corvette Resto Mod Convertible became the highest priced classic collectible sold this weekend. The Lyndale Blue ’64 Corvette Custom with tube frame, Detroit Speed power steering and Vintage Air met reserve at $82,000. Then it proceeded to sell for $85,000 at the hammer. It was the most heavily bid upon collectible of the auction on Saturday, and was the high point of the day as Carlisle Auctions wrapped up their two-day auction sale in Lakeland, Florida. Earlier, a 2021 Lincoln Navigator became the high sale among late model offerings when it went for $97,000. The Lakeland Winter collector Car Auction was held at the Sun N Fun Expo, February 25-26, 2022. 

Here are some of the cars we were watching on Saturday.

We talked with the Carlisle Auction crew and found out they had a record number of consignments here for sale. And the crowd was amazing. There was a full house of bidders in the Sun N Fun Expo hangar on Friday. The excitement was high for this first Florida auction sale for 2022.

On Friday, prices were inline with market prices. Here is what we watched sell here on Friday.
 
Bidding was active all day. The big action came in the middle of the afternoon as a staccato of top cars crossed the auction block. One thing we took away from the sale is that classic first generation Ford Mustang coupes are going up in value. For years the 1965 and 66 Mustang hardtops have languished in the $10,000 to $12,000 price range. But this weekend we saw several selling from between $20,000 and $27,000. Of course, Mustang convertibles and fastbacks have always carried a higher value. But it looks as though the coupes (hardtops) are catching up.

Every February a trio of airplane hangars come to life as the Lakeland Winter Auction invades the SUN ‘n FUN Expo Campus in Lakeland, Florida.  The event, a two-day classic and collector car auction powered by Carlisle Auctions, hosts 400+ pieces of automotive history along with buyers, sellers and a hard-working staff.  The Lakeland Winter Collector Car Auction, slated for February 25-26, 2022, is a means to connect buyers and sellers with an investment that truly accelerates.  More so, the auction is a means to start or add to an existing collection.  Some rides are head turners but are ultimately daily drivers.  Others are top of the line, best of show type consignments.  In between, there are a few that the owner can simply have fun with along the way.

Spring Raleigh Classic Car Auction

The Spring Raleigh Classic Car Auction swung into high gear early as heavy bidding emerged on a special 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo that belonged to famous Indy Car driver Roger Mears. He was given this Jeep Laredo for winning the Baja 1000 race. When the hammer fell, the winning bid was $100,000. That was a great start to what turned out to be a big day here at the  Raleigh Classic Car Auction, April 30-May 1, 2021 in Youngsville, North Carolina. 

Classic Off-Road vehicles continue to capture high prices at these auctions. Although a 1993 Land Rover NAS Defender did not sell while it was on the auction block, a buyer pursued it through a post-auction sale. The sales price was recorded at $137,500. Technically, it was the top sale of the day.

It is the perfect spot for holding this type of event. The brand new facility and the spacious seating layout makes for a very safe environment for a serious collector car auction.

A very interesting collection of rare American microcars was offered for sale at the Raleigh Classic Auction on Friday. The collection of rare cars includes some extraordinary examples of American Austin Bantams. The Raleigh Classic Car Auction has made its reputation on having a good assortment of highly original and low-mile cars, many coming from estate liquidations each year. They say over 70 percent of the vehicles listed in their brochure have low actual miles or are 100 percent original. 

Cars-On-Line newsletter readers remember the Raleigh Classic as one of our favorite auction events. This collector car auction sale has the reputation of bringing in some of the most desirable collector cars in the country. This is a much revered auction sale with collectors from all over the Southeastern states congregated to buy quality collector vehicles. Many here are collector car dealers restocking their inventories. This auction is famous for some of the nicest low-mile collector cars available on market today. 

The Spring Raleigh Classic Car Auction opened to a car hungry crowd of buyers on Friday. Car collectors were eagerly bidding on the top cars here in Youngsville, North Carolina on the first day of the sale, running April 30 to May 1, 2021. This is one of Cars-On-Line’s favorite auction venues because of the quality of cars they draw at this sale. With over 300 cars and trucks in the auction inventory, there were about 150 that went through on Friday.

Following the Barrett-Jackson Auction last month and the Carlisle Auction last weekend, the price action seems to indicate that collector car prices will be on the rise this spring. With the Raleigh Classic Auction now on the books we can see what collector cars will be going for post-Covid. Think of it as taking the market’s temperature (to use a medical analogy.)

Lakeland Winter Auction at Sun ‘n Fun

The collector car market is alive and well. That’s the message we got from the Lakeland Winter Auction here in Lakeland, Florida. In live “in-person” bidding on Saturday top cars got competitive bids, and some strong numbers. As our Cars-On-Line newsletter readers and Facebook fans joined us for the Saturday afternoon action, they saw strong bidding for mid-year Corvettes and resto mod Camaros. The top sale today was a Marina blue 1967 Corvette 427/390 Convertible with only 31k miles. The winning bid was $91,000 after the seller dropped his reserve.

Friday at the Lakeland Winter Auction

It created a little excitement when a 2019 Corvette ZR1 stole the show at the Lakeland Winter Auction here on Friday. It was the top sale of the day as the sale by Carlisle Auctions was in its first day here at the Sun ‘n Fun Expo in Lakeland, Florida. The winning bid for the Sebring Orange sports car was $127,000.

Black Widow Corvette SEMA Show Car For Sale

When Rod Saboury’s Black Widow Corvette appeared at the SEMA Convention in 2012 it began a two-year journey on the show car circuit across the country. Having built a name for himself in drag racing and custom car building over the years, Saboury often has nationally acclaimed custom Corvettes to show at major car show events. The Black Widow went on to be named Best Pro Street at the 2013 East Coast Indoor Nationals. Many of you remember it from the Goodguys shows in 2014. Later, the car was sold at a Mecum Auction in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 

Still in top show condition, it will be Cars-On-Line.com’s featured car in their weekly newsletter on Saturday. (Follow this link to view the advertisement and see detailed photos.)  The current owner from Lewes, Delaware says it is still winning awards with several 2018 trophies cited in the ad. Whether you call it a resto mod or a pro street, it was designed to be very streetable. 

Evidently Saboury found a parts car ’63 Corvette Split Window at Carlisle one year. The next thing you know he was having Legacy Innovations build him a resto mod version of the ’63 Split Window. They put a TIG-welded tube chassis underneath and began building an over the top classic custom as you would a drag car. They used a Detroit Speed X-Gen front suspension, JRi shocks, PAC springs,  with power rack-and-pinion Detroit Speed QUADRALink rear suspension and swivel-links Legacy Innovation-built Ford 9″ rear end with  Strange Engineering’s aluminum S-Trac 3.73:1 gears. 

The Chevrolet Performance Corvette ZR1 6.2L is supercharged producing 638 horsepower,  604lb-ft of torque. It features a fabricated LS9 dry-sump oil tank and system, fabricated functional front spoiler providing additional supercharger fluid cooling, fabricated stainless steel headers and sidepipes with custom integrated mufflers all ceramic coated. And the carbon-fiber air intake system is all hand fabricated as well. Power transfers via a Tranzilla T-56 six-speed transmission with McLoed hydraulic dual disk clutch. It stops by Wilwood custom engraved C6 calipers with drilled and slotted rotors. Billet Specialties rims with fabricated Corvette knock-off spinners give style to the meaty Mickey Thompson Sportman radials with handmade Redline sidewalls. 

Add-ons such as reverse-opening carbon-fiber hood that integrates an OEM C6 ZR1 supercharger window, or a mini-tubbed rear floor, smooth firewall and hidden wiper motor all add to the show car appeal. All that power equipment fits neatly under the hood and looks like it was meant to be there. 

The custom touches are endless in detail. Yet the Black Widow Corvette is tastefully done and keeps much of the original ’63 look and feel.  The current owner says over $325,000 was invested in the original build. It will be interesting to see who buys the Black Widow Corvette. It is way too much car for the faint of heart. Can you Power Tour in a Pro Street?

2018 Dodge SRT Demon Hot New Future Classic

2018 Dodge SRT Demon – Born To Be Collectible

Few cars are collectible from the moment they are born. But when the 2018 Dodge SRT Demon came off the assembly line in January there has been such a clamor for this retro classic Mopar that it looks like it is already collectible right from the gitgo. 

This past weekend five of these 2018 Dodge SRT Demon Challengers crossed the auction block in prime time. Three were sold and all were bid up over $120,000. And earlier this year Mecum Auctions sold one for $170,500 at the Houston sale. That is way above the $89,062 sales price which dealers are required to sell them for, if you can find one. The Mecum Auction specializes in American muscle cars so it was only fitting that it was at Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Auction in Indy that five of these special retro Mopar muscle cars were offered for sale.     2018 Dodge SRT Demon sold for $143,000, Lot # 178.1

The first one to cross the auction block at Mecum last week was a black 2018 Dodge SRT Demon with just five miles on it. It stood there “still in the wrapper” with all the plastic wrap just like it is delivered to a dealership from the factory. (Follow this link to the Mecum promo informationn on Lot # T108.) It hasd no passenger seat, no back seat and no carpet in the trunk. All the race ready stuff was still in the crate. The factory race car sold for $126,500. 

Although the sticker price on a 2018 Dodge SRT Demon is $89,062, some dealers are selling the right to order the car apart from the price. (The reason for this is that Dodge is only allocating deliveries to dealers who keep the sale price below the MSRP.) Other dealers are only selling Demons to their priority customers. Dodge is still building the 3,000 initial production run of Demons and deliveries are still being scheduled. It is anticipated that there will be far more people who want to buy a 2018 Dodge SRT Demon than there are cars to sell. So the three cars being offered here in Indianapolis at the Mecum Auction were premium offerings. 

A black 2018 Dodge SRT Demon with the black interior sold for $143,000. (See the Mecum promo info for Lot # S178.1.) It too was without dealer prep and offered still “in the wrapper” from the factory. They say it had only five miles on the odometer. This one came with the Demon Crate Package – all the racing stuff. With the Demon Crate Package you can increase the horsepower from the base 808 to 840 hp. The Mecum promo said it also came with a special Demon Press Kit which was only available to those in attendance at the original Demon unveiling ceremony in New York City. Collectors will want to know that the Demon Press Kit will become a pricey collectible of its own. 

The car uses functional air-catcher headlamps and the Demon-exclusive enlarged hood scoop. Under that hood is the supercharged and intercooled 6.2L Hemi V-8 engine with aluminum heads and port fuel injection. A ZF 8-speed automatic with transbrake is behind it, and a 3.09 mechanical limited-slip differential can put this monster way into the triple-digit zone. Suspension parts like Bilstein shocks, hollow anti-roll bars, multi-link rear suspension, speed-sensing power steering and 4-wheel disc brakes. 

Insights From A Mopar Veteran

Earlier this year we interviewed Steve Magnante, TV personality and Dodge representative, while we were covering the Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He was there to do a reveal on the new 2018 Dodge SRT Demon. He gave our photographer, Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com, some insights as to what to expect of the much talked about retro Demon. The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, street legal but designed for use on the drag strip, is the quickest production car ever built. With a 6.2-liter V-8 engine that produces 840 horsepower, the car can accelerate from 0–140 mph in about nine seconds. Only 3,000 are being built for the U.S. market and an additional 300 for Canada.

Most hot new performance cars are “under produced” so as to keep the demand high. If it is rare, people will be clamoring for it. But this 2018 Dodge SRT Demon may prove collectible right out of the chute. Will it depreciate in value like all other new cars do after so many years? Or will it be like the Ford GT where it continues to get more valuable every year? We think the latter.
