1935 Ford Slantback Wins Great 8 Award
When the Great 8 notification team walked up to Robert Chapman with the Great 8 standard to put in his car show display, he said his knees almost buckled. The emotions you feel when years of work on your custom car come to fuition and you receive the Great 8 award at the Detroit Autorama are honest, raw and unbelievable. His 1935 Ford Slantback Custom will be honored this weekend as one of those top custom builds to vie for the Ridler Award.
He named his 1935 Ford Slantback “Insaniti” because of how much time, effort and money it takes to build a car like this. Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com did a video interview with Mr. Chapman. Here are some insights he gave us into the build.
This was an all steel body with a 2-inch chopped top, hidden hinges, a custom electronic hood by Nitro Manufacturing, and remote doors. It has all the structural stuff you need on a quality ride, such as independent suspension, stainless upper and lower control arms, chrome coilovers, chrome rear four-bar, polished 9″ rear, and polished rear center section. You’ll see a complete custom leather interior by Paul Atkins. This car has a custom manufactured front drive system and a custom built radiator by Nitro.
Here is how it looked on Friday when it won a Great 8 award:
