2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year

The Goodguys 2014 Street Rod of the Year is a 1932 Ford Fordor owned by Don Smith of Mansfield, TX. This will make a lot of our Cars On Line.com newsletter readers happy. Many remember it as the car that came in second in the judging in the Detroit Autorama for the Ridler Award in March. Don Smith and his wife Carolyn will be pleased. They are some of the nicest people on earth. We congratulate them for their belief in this car.

Earlier this afternoon the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year Finalists were announced. We barely had time to get the announcement up on Facebook when we were hearing that the winner was about to be announced. Here are the finalists for the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year award.

1935 Ford Coupe — The 1935 Ford 3-Window Coupe owned by Mike Johsnston of Livonia, NY has been named to the Final 5 cars to be considered for the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year award. It has a 428 Ford FE engine and Tremec 5-speed. The car has been stretched in front and has a custom trunk.

By the end of the day on Friday they were lining up the top cars entered in the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year competition here in Columbus, Ohio. We are here covering the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals for our newsletter readers. The is the ultimate Goodguys event.

By mid-day on Saturday we already knew which of these incredible street rods would be included in the Top Five. Quite frankly we thought some of the incredible rides you’ll see here below would have been in the top five. Here are some of the other cars that were in the competition for 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year:

1937 Ford Woody Wagon for 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year — A 1937 Ford Woody Wagon done all custom was entered in the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year competition by Mike Lynch of Ft Dodge, IA. It has an LS1 Chevy small block, 4L60E transmission, TCI chassis with Ride Tech Air Ride, Leather by Upholstery Unlimited and PPG base coat/clear coat paint.

1930 Ford Model A Street Rod — Bill Yorker of Canton, CT brought his ioncredible extreme custom 1930 Ford Model A to the Goodguys Columbus Nationals here in Ohio. That is a blown 528 Hemi engine towering over the chopped and channeled street rod. It will be one of the cars competing for 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year.

1947 Buick Super Convertible — Dale Turner is putting the finishing strokes on that Dupont Chroma paint as he prepares his 1947 Buick Super Custom Convertible for the competition for 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year.

1947 Hudson Custom Pickup — The custom paint and bed on this “over the top” 1947 Hudson Custom Truck are pretty edgy. Jason McPike from Cypress, Texas says his truck was built by Painthouse. The colors are “Green Acres Pearl” over “Bad,Bad, Leroy Brown.”

2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals

This was one of the best shows of the year so far. What a blast we had at the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals on Sunday, the final day of the show. According to Goodguys Rod & Custom Association there were over 6,100 cars registered at the PPG sponsored Goodguys Nationals this weekend.

Sunday afternoon the crowd in the awards hall went crazy when they announced the winner of the Goodguys’ “Logo” car drawing. The chopped and channeled 1932 Ford Tudor Sedan was won by Terry Morgan of San Diego, California. The ’32 Deuce Tudor had been promoted for the last two years. It is a car that was built as a “tribute” to the Goodguys logo (i.e. yellow hot rod). Terry’s son Eric drew the winning key. There were 34 people in the contest from all over the US. All contestants drew keys from a bow. One of the keys would start the car. Eric was the 25^th person to try his luck and was obviously one happy guy.

A chopped and channeled 1932 Ford Tudor hot rod was a “tribute” to the car seen on the Goodguys’ logo. It was also the Goodguys “Giveaway” car won by Terry Morgan of San Diego, CA. The announcement came on Sunday. (Photos by Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com>

Yesterday Goodguys Rod & Custom Association crowned their 2014 Street Machine of the Year winner and their 2014 Street Rod of the Year award winner. Here are the winning cars:

1967 Chevy Nova at 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals — Steve Tornari’s 1967 Chevy Nova resto mod custom has been named 2014 Goodguys Street Machine of the Year. This high tech custom may be setting the stage for a more modern type of custom design with its computer controlled suspension, custom paint with matching wheels and carbon fiber engine compartment. On Saturday evening here at the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals we were told that a 1967 Chevy Nova resto mod from Florida was the new 2014 Goodguys Street Machine of the Year. Earlier in the afternoon, the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year was chosen. A 1932 Ford Fordor won the top street rod award. The 1932 Ford Fordor is owned by Don and Carolyn Smith of Mansfield, Texas.

As the Friday session of the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals came to an end we had already packed a week’s worth of action into one day. The Autocross racing early in the day, the display of the Street Machine of the Year and Street Rod of the Year competition and the Vintage Drags at the National Trail Raceway. That’s a lot to take in for one day. But it was worth it. We’re here reporting on all the action at the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

1930 Ford Model A street rod at the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals — An extreme chopped 1930 Ford Model A with a Blown 528 Hemi was brought to Columbus by Bill Yorker of Canton, Connecticut. It is one of the most astounding sights here at the 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals. It will be competing for the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year award.

The 2014 Goodguys Columbus Nationals is the biggest show of the year for America’s largest street rod and customs organization. Some of the top cars in the country were on hand to compete in the much heralded Goodguys 2014 Optima Battery Street Machine of the Year competition. The Goodguys 2014 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year was also announced this weekend. Cars On Line.com published the winner here on Saturday. On Friday morning J.F. Launier and his Ridler Award winning 1964 Buick Riviera called “Rivision” competed in the Autocross competition which is a requirement to be considered for the 2014 Goodguys Street Machine of the Year award. Launier put on a good show with a 36-second run. He was holding nothing back as he spun around the corners and stood on it through the finish line. This performance may have vaulted him into the leadership among the cars competing to be 2014 Goodguys Street Machine of the Year. Take a look at his first run in video below:

The judging for both the 2014 Goodguys Street Machine of the Year award and the 2014 Goodguys Street Rod of the Year award will begin on Saturday. We will bring you photos of some of the contestants here. The field of about 20 for each award will be weeded down to just five tomorrow. The announcement of which cars will be in the top five for each award will be carried here. So stay tuned to this page for more on the top five cars.

The Goodguys Columbus Nationals is also known as the Goodguys 17th Annual Goodguys PPG Nationals since PPG is the big sponsor of this event. For many years this has been where hot rod history was made with the top cars in the hobby meeting here to contend for the two biggest awards of the summer car show season.
