1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Chosen As 2016 CAR of the YEAR
The 1988 Lamorghini Countach 5000 has been chosen by Cars On Line.com readers as their 2016 CAR of the YEAR. The contest for 2016 CAR of the YEAR closed on Thursday with 22 percent of respondents voting for the the classic Lamborghini from Gateway Classic Cars in St Louis, Missouri. It was chosen from a field of 14 cars featured during 2016 in the Cars On Line newsletter.
The 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 defines the term “exotic sports car.” (Click here to view the Lamborghini 5000 in the Gateway Classic Cars ad.) It leant genre to a generation of sports super cars so untamed and beautiful that they excited the primal instincts of a “go-fast” generation. It was our banner story for our first newsletter in December and claimed features such as a high-revving mid-engine V12, canteleavered “Lambo” doors, beautiful ground effects and the road-hugging wing. We are told that this particular Countach 5000, white with red leather interior, is one-of-a-kind made with left hand drive for the U.S. market. The odometer reads just 22,848 kilometers. The 5000 Ouattrovalvole engine produces 420 horsepower, revving up to 7,500 rpm!
The 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 was chosen from a field of cars featured this year in the Cars On Line newsletter. Our newsletter readers and their friends were invited to vote in the 2016 CAR of the YEAR poll during the last two weeks of December. Cars On Line readers caught wind of the poll when they read about it in the 2016 COL YEAR in REVIEW feature in a recent Cars On Line newsletter. The response from this year.s CAR of the YEAR poll was greater than any other poll we’ve ever run on the COL site.
The car that took second place honors in the poll was a 1969 Ford Torino Talladega which sold earlier in the year after being featured in the Cars On Line newsletter in February of 2016. It received 12 percent of the vote. The celebrity 1930 Ford Old School Coupe, built by Jesse James for Paul Teutul, Sr on the TV show Outlaw Garage, came in No. 3 in the poll with 9 percent of the vote.
For the past two weeks the 2016 CAR of the YEAR poll was promoted on our COL Facebook and Twitter pages. The response was overwhelming with over 450 voters participating.
