2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals Finale …

During the 2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals this afternoon, a young Gilbert, Arizona couple had the thrill of their lives. Their ticket number was announced identifying them as the winner of the 2017 Goodguys Giveaway Car, a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie Custom built for Pro Touring. Leila Crupi could not stop screaming for joy as her husband Chris signed the acceptance form from Goodguys. Chris told us he has been a Ford Galaxie collector for years. The award could not have gone to a more fitting couple.

As the 19th Annual 2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals came to a close this afternoon, Goodguys’ Grand Finale was in all measures one of the best major events in Goodguys’ history. The final Goodguys event for the 2016 car show season was held here in Scottsdale, Arizona, November 18-20, 2016. It is fair to call it “the biggest and the best” Goodguys show of the year. This is the show where all of the award winners for the past year are invited to soak up a little Arizona sunshine. Click the video window to see a snippet of the action:

Over 3,000 rods, customs, classics, muscle cars and trucks, 1972 and older, were registered to display on the show grounds at Westworld in Scottsdale (on the outskirts of Phoenix.) Duel in the Desert at 2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals …

Danny Popp of Cincinnati, Ohio won the Duel in the Desert today at the 19th Annual 2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals. For most of the afternoon, Scott Fraser’s aluminum bodied 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra was turning in times a full second faster than Popp and his other competitors. But on the final run with Popp and Fraser competing for first place, Popp ran a 63.859 while Fraser ran a 63.9. It was that close. Popp wins a $3,000 cash prize.

All the top Autocross winners for the 2016 Goodguys Car Show season were invited to be here today. These cars have all won major Autocross events during the year. They were here today to win the biggest cash award of the year. But it wasn’t about the money. It was an intense competition to gain the title of Autocross Champion of the Year.  Here are some to the top cars in the Goodguys Shoutout here in Scottsdale on Saturday:

  • Danny Popp's 1972 Corvette at the 2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals

Of the top Pro Class drivers from previous Goodguys events this year, all the winners were invited to the big “shootout” wild west style.  Former winner Danny Popp, Detroit Speed’s Ryan Matthews and Scott Fraser, whom you met last week in Pleasanton, were all here to compete. Two-time Indy winner Al Unser, Jr ran his 1970 Camaro in the Autocross as well. This one was worth watching.

Goodguys Rod & Custom Association is one of the premier car show promotions companies in the U.S. Their 2016 Goodguys Southwest Nationals is the final show of the 2016 car show season. It is an event every Goodguys member wants to attend because you can’t turn around here without bumping into another 2016 winning show car. 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction – Saturday “Prime Time”

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — The excitement is palatable here at the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction. The big money is in the house. Temperatures are already a balmy 80 degrees in the desert air. The smell of barbecue and exhaust fumes are filling the air. “Prime Time” Saturday here at the 43rd Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction is about to get underway.

Here are some of the sales we want to watch. Let’s see if our Facebook readers can predict the prices that these cars are likely to bring as they cross the auction block at the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction.

1967 Corvette L88
Only 20 1967 L88s were produced. This is the only known red/red example. The “crown jewel of the Corvettes” and its history, documentation and judging records prove it. There is a reserve on this car. When it was at $3,450,000 it had not yet met reserve. Wow, they took the reserve off! Sold for $3,5 million. This will be the top sale here at the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction for this year, and sets a new record for L88 Corvettes.

 

1954 Plymouth Belmont Concept Car
Chrysler took this 1954 Plymouth Belmont Concept Car to the Chicago Auto Show and New York Autorama in ’54. It was designed by Virgil Exner, but was never put into production. It has been shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Powered by a 241/150hp 3.9 Liter V8 with a Hy-drive transmission. Plymouth never produced a two-seater sports car until the Prowler. The reserve on this car was not lifted even though it was bid up to $1.2 million.

 

1963 Shelby Cooper Monaco King Cobra
With a 5-Liter V8 this 1963 Shelby Cooper Monaco King Cobra was a monster on a road course. This is the only remaining original King Cobra in existence. Not street legal, sold on Bill of Sale only. It was authenticated by Carroll Shelby himself. This is one of the most sought-after and significant automobiles ever built and raced by Carroll Shelby and the Shelby American team. CM/3/63 has been driven by America’s premier drivers including Holbert, Miles, Leslie, Pabst, Scott and Bucknum in the USRRC Series. It was no surprise when it received a winning bid of $1.5 million here at the Barrett-Jackson.

 

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing
Accompanying this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing onto the auction stage was Stirling Moss. It was bought new in Southern California at Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood. A three-owner car and the third owner had the car from the spring of 1960 all the way until May of 2013. The sale brought $1,900,000.

 

1929 Duesenberg SJ Lebaron
Everything was impeccable on this 1929 Duesenberg SJ Lebaron Dual Cowl Phaeton when it crossed the auction stage. Ray Wolfe said this engine was designated for the Marmom Meteor and was delivered with a supercharger and the extremely rare dual carburetor configuration. It is no wonder that the winning bid went to $1.3 million.

 

1932 Auburn Boattail Speedster
This 1932 Auburn Boattail Speedster is one of the most gorgeous cars you could want to view. They say it is a body-off restoration approximately five years ago. Scored 100 points in CCCA and is also a Senior car. Best of Show winner, People’s Choice at St. Michael’s Concours d’Elegance. Needs nothing. It was sold for $440,000.

 

1937 Lincoln K Willoughby
Look at this 1937 Lincoln K Willoughby 7-Passenger Touring car. They say it was a commissioned parade car for the State of New York Governor Herbert Lehman. One of seven made for special orders. Last production of Grand Touring cars. This gorgeous and rare vintage motorcar sold for $260,000. This one was well bought.

These cars below will be sold during the early part of the afternoon, 1 PM to 3 PM on Saturday. You’ll see this segment of the Barrett-Jackson Auction on FOX regular broadcast stations (your local FOX station.)

Snake And the Mongoose at 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction
Everyone here in Scottsdale believes that the Snake And the Mongoose set of match race vehicles will be the premier sale at the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction. All four vehicles from the movie Snake & the Mongoose were restored by Don “Snake” Prudhomme. The Cuda drag car and two 1967 Dodge Ramp truck haulers were the vehicles which Prudhomme and Tom “Mongoose” McEwen actually used during their Mattel Match Race tour in 1970. The yellow Dodge D-700 ramp truck was purchased by Prudhomme from Richard Petty. The red Dodge Ramp truck used by McEwen was originally purchased from Sox & Martin. Will this four-vehicle set be this year’s Batmobile sale here at the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction? Unfortunately the reserve was not met at $1 million. Prudhomme decided to keep the vehicles. Then, after the sale, he was approached by NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. The two famous racing legends struck a deal. The famous race cars and their haulers will now reside in Hendrick’s museum in Concord, North Carolina. A great ending to a storied set of racing vehicles.

 

1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird
The car that Plymouth built to lure Richard Petty back to their camp in NASCAR. Original 426/425hp HEMI engine and 727 automatic. Visual inspection by two Mopar authorities. Rotisserie restoration. Outstanding in every detail. We said on our Facebook page that this is the car that could steal the show. It did bring big money at $500,000.

 

1963 Corvette Pro Street
The 1963 Corvette Pro Street (shown above) will be among the most desirable cars in the high profile sale this weekend. Among the fine selection of desirable collector Corvettes to be sold is a car familiar to Car On Line readers. The Saturday prime time lineup of cars which will cross the auction block at this year’s Barrett-Jackson Auction includes the 1963 Corvette Pro Street which was chosen as last year’s 2012 CAR of the YEAR on the Cars On Line website.
The custom Split Window Corvette is billed as the “The World’s Fastest Street Legal Corvette,” certified by NHRA and IHRA Pro Mod- 7.50 ET and faster. Newsletter readers know that this car was designed and built by Rod Saboury, one of the world’s most noted Pro Street Corvette builders. The body is a real 1963 split window with original VIN plate and correct title, lengthened and widened hood with scoops to house the trubos. Lengthened 12″, 6″ in rear of front fenders, 4″ in the roof and 2″ in the rear quarters. For more information see our featue article on the Corvettes – 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction. 1963 Corvette Asteroid
The original owner, Bob Nordskog, was a well-known boat racer and an entrepreneur that loved speed. He built a dual purpose show/race car that was out of this world called the “Asteroid.” It was further restored by George Barris where it received this incredible paint job. Sold for $170,000.

A 1969 Corvette L88 race car is featured in the Cars On Line preview of Corvettes – 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction. This incredible Corvette L88 is one of only four factory light weight L88’s ever produced. The world record holding #57 Rebel Corvette convertible has appeared in numerous publications and graced the cover of Autoweek, Corvette News and Corvette Corner back in its day. Amazing, just sold for $2.6 million. It was he second highest sale of the day.

1971 Corvette ZR2
How rare is this? A 1971 Corvette ZR2, one of 12 built, 454/425hp, M22 4-speed, F41 suspension, 4.11 and J56 power brakes. A ZR1 went through earlier. They were designated by Chevrolet as the Off-Road package, code for factory race car. Holy Cow! It sold for $450,000! Top sale of the day so far!

 

1969 Baldwin Motion Chevelle
We’re really interested in what this 1969 Baldwin Motion Chevelle will bring at the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction. You don’t see that many of these up for sale at public auctions. Will it get Yenko type money?

 

1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible
What a find. A yellow 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible. These vehicles used to sell for over $250,000 before the recession. What will it bring today? Wow! Sold for $280,000! Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

 

1969 COPO Camaro
A real 1969 COPO Camaro was a Jerry MacNeish inspected and certified COPO Camaro that was exported into Canada with documentation. Complete frame-off, nut and bolt restoration with extensive use of original and NOS parts. It sold early in the show today for $120,00

The 2014 Barrett-Jackson Auction will have a new look this year as nearly everything about the show has changed. They have a new auction stadium compliments of the city of Scottsdale, so the grounds are set up very differently this year. You will also note that FOX Sports has bought out the SPEED Channel so the schedule for watching the Barrett-Jackson on TV is very different this year. You need a schedule to find out which segments of the auction will be seen on the different channels. See the schedule at the bottom of this page.
