Choose the 2019 CAR of the YEAR!
Readers Poll for 2019 Car of the Year
The promotion and fanfare for our 2019 CAR of the YEAR poll was momentous. So it is time to announce which car our readers have chosen as Classic CAR of the YEAR for 2019. Drumroll
please … RK Motors Charlotte will be happy to know that our readers chose their 1964 Ford Thunderbolt as their favorite in this year’s readers poll. From a field of fourteen very rare and desirable classic cars, muscle cars, street rods and even a classic pickup truck, the 1964 Ford Thunderbolt (a real one mind you) got 18 percent of the vote to be named CAR of the YEAR on the internet for 2019.
The CAR of the YEAR poll saw the lead change several times over the last week. Going into the final week, the 1967 Dodge Hemi Coronet R/T Convertible from REV Muscle Cars was the top car in the voting. Then the 1969 Boss 429 Mustang took over the lead at mid-week. But just in the last few days the Thunderbolt came on strong in the voting to take first place.

This is a very rare Boss 9 because it is one of the first 275 built which makes it an S code, says the private seller from Archbald, Pennsylvania. The S code engines had magnesium valve covers and heavier rods and internals. The car is one of 69 Wimbeldon white S codes ever made, according to the Marti Report. Ford produced 859 Boss 429s in 1969—the first of a two year model run. Ford subcontracted the work of building the Boss 429 to Kar Kraft, an aftermarket car builder in the Detroit area. They had the difficult job of fitting the massive 429 big block underneath the hood of a Mustang. The 1969 Boss 429 Semi Hemi enginetask involved having to widen the space between the shock towers and move the front suspension mounts in order to make room for the engine. Although Ford rated the Semi Hemi engine at 375 horsepower it was pretty much assured that it was really around 500 horsepower. It was a handfull to handle on the road but in a straight line it just couldn’t be beat. With the right setup it would do 10 second quarter-miles pretty consistently.
Newsletter readers may have noted that concours quality Boss 9’s are now bringing big money at top auctions around the country. (Remember two weeks ago when a Jade 1969 Boss 429 Mustang brought 500,000 at the RM Auction in Monterey?) This one might actually have to be considered to be offered at a discount at $250,000. It’s worth that all day.
