2017 Amelia Island Concours – Best Car Show On The East Coast

2017 Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance
It was just announced here at the show field during the 2017 Amelia Island Concours that the two top awards went to a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider for Concours de Sport, and a 1935 Duesenberg SJ 582 Dual Cowl Phaeton for the vaunted Concours D’Elegance award.
The ’39 Alfa Spider is part of the A. Dano Davis Collection in Jacksonville, Florida. In its day the right-hand-drive Alfa Lungo Spider was the most desirable sports you could buy. Only 12 Touring Spiders were ever produced. Only seven were produced with the long chassis as this one has. Most of the Lungo Spiders were used for racing. This car was raced in San Paolo in 1949 and 1950. After that the car disappeared from public notice until 40 years later when it was redone.
The ’35 Duesenberg SJ is owned by Terence Adderley from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It is a Torpedo Phaeton designed by Gordon Buehrig himself. Mr. Adderley said it was one of the last Torpedo Phaetons built. It was born a Duesenberg J with custom coachwork by the A.J. Walker Company. But the Wisconsin buyer was not happy with the car and sent it back to Indianapolis where it was updated with a supercharged SJ-582 engine. It has a 420 ci overhead cam engine. In supercharged form it is said to produce 320 horsepower.
But there was much more to see on the show field on Saturday:
The 2017 Amelia Island Concours, March 10-13, 2017, will be one for the history books. In its 22nd year, the The Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance moved to a Saturday timeslot for the first time. Usually the concours would be held on Sunday afternoon. For the first time in its history the fast moving Amelia Island Concours staff had to modify their schedule and reset the event for Saturday instead of the normal Sunday venue. The potential for torrential rains on Sunday afternoon was not good news for owners of six figure valued vintage classic cars. So the Concours officials made the call to reset the event for Saturday. The crowds were heavy along the concours field. The change did not seem to dampen the enthusiasm for seeing these incredible vintage motorcars.
This is what it is like to be here at the 2017 Amelia Island Concours:
“This show brings in cars from all over the world,” our photojournalist Bob Boberg told us. “In its 22nd year, the concours is growing in prestige and excitement. You see cars here that you’ll never see anywhere else.” Boberg and his wife Donna will capture the show in photos and video for our Cars On Line.com readers.
The show, starting on Friday and running through Sunday, March 13, 2017, is a world class exhibition of automotive history. There were over 300 rare vehicles from collections from around the world. Most of the activity revolves around The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach and The Ritz-Carlton.
