Highest Priced Cars Sold During Arizona Auction Week

The highest priced cars sold during Arizona Auction Week were not at the 2017 Barrett-Jackson Auction. In fact, the top sale of the week here in the Phoenix area was a 1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight Competition Coupe which sold for $6.7 million at the Bonham Auction on Friday. The Bonham Auction also produced the third highest price sale on Friday, a 1962 Ferrari 340 America Spider with a $5.8 million price tag.

They covered the top sales at the exclusive auctions that occur here during Arizona Auctions Week. Many high profile auctions are held here to absorb all the buyers that gather here for the Barrett-Jackson Auction each year. It is ironic that none of the top sales actually occured at the Barrett-Jackson itself this year.

While the auctions were well attended again this year, none of the auction houses this year were able to match last year’s total sales figures. Even the highest priced cars sold during Arizona Auction Week failed to match the numbers in last years’s sales.

2016 Amelia Island Concours Best Car Show on the East Coast

2016 Amelia Island Concours on Sunday …

The finale of the 2016 Amelia Island Concours saw a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II win the Concours D’Elegance Best of Show and a rare 1952 Pegaso Z102 Cupula win the Concours de Sport. It was a fine conclusion to the whirlwind weekend of legacy antique, vintage and classic cars so rare that you would only see them here on Amelia Island.

To earn a Best of Show at Amelia Island is much like getting a Best of Show at the venerable Pebble Beach Concours in California. Each year the Amelia Island Concours awards a Best of Show in two categories.

The 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Brewster Town Sedan has been announced as the winner of the 2016 Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance. It is believed to be from the Nethercutt Collection and also won a Palos Verdes Concours Best in Class in 2015. The Nethercutt Collection is owned by the Merle Norman Cosmetics family with Jack and Helen Nethercutt on the board of the Nethercutt Collection.

The 2016 Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance goes to a vintage classic motorcar, while the Concours de Sport goes to a classic sports car.

The coachwork by the Empresa Nacional de Autocamiones SA in Spain, a Spanish bus and truck company, and the “bubble top” glass trunk by designer Wilfredo Ricart, mark the 1952 Pegaso Z102 Cupula as a unique classic exotic sports car, possibly the rarest of its era. This particular Pegaso was built for a President of the Dominican Republic, Rafael Trujillo. After his assassination, the government sold the car to a New York businessman. It’s most comphrehensive restoration was done in 1987. It is an 8-cylinder coupe.

This year there was a special display for the Spanish made Pegaso sports cars. Of the 87 ever built 15 were present here at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours, quite a coup for this historic show.

“This show brings in cars from all over the world,” our photojournalist Bob Boberg told us. “In its 21st year, the concours is growing in prestige and excitement. You see cars here that you’ll never see anywhere else.” Boberg captured the show in photos and video for our Cars On Line.com readers. On Saturday at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours we covered the RM/Sotheby’s Auction. What a blend of vintage motorcars, race cars and American classics. Here are some of the top sales for the RM/Sotheby’s sale.

A 1962 Ferrari LWB Coupe Areodinamico sells for $4 million at the RM/Sotheby's Auction on Saturday.
A 1931 Stutz DV-32 Victoria sells for $1 million at the RM/Sotheby's Auction during 2016 Amelia Island Concours.

The show which started on Friday ran through Sunday, March 13, 2016. For the main event, a world class exhibition of automotive history has convened here with 250 rare vehicles from collections from around the world. We’re at The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach and The Ritz-Carlton.

The highlight of the show weekend was the announcement of the 2016 Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance Best of Show awards on Sunday afternoon.

In addition, there are four major auction houses setting up on Amelia Island to add some interesting vintage car sales to the event. Yesterday as the 2016 Amelia Island Concours was officially underway, the buzz was all about the sale of the Jerry Seinfeld Porsche collection. Seinfeld, comedian and star of the TV sitcom which bore his name, took the stage at the Gooding & Company Auction here to introduce the high profile auction sale. He cheered from the sidelines as his rare Porsches were sold for big $$$.

Last night, on Thursday, the Bonhams Auction drew a packed crowd of bidders as their docket of fine motorcars set a new record for this sale. See the photos of the top sales in the slider below:

2016 Amelia Island Concours features 1937 Bugatt Type 57C Sports Toureri as top sale at the Bonhams Auction on Thursday. Sold for $9,735,000.

The top sale at the Bonhams Auction was a 1937 Bugatti 57SC Sports Tourer by Vanden Plas. Armed with a generous amount of international buzz from the preceding weeks, this very special pre-war car had the auction tent packed to capacity with bidders and spectators. With a starting bid of $6 million, the bidding quickly rose to $8 million. Then, followed by strong applause from the audience, the car sold to a private American collector for a total sum of $9,735,000, making it the most valuable 57S ever sold at auction and the most valuable pre-war car ever sold at Amelia Island.

A Connecticut-built 1896 Armstrong Phaeton Hybrid was also sold during the Bonhams Auction. As the oldest – and likely the very first – known modern hybrid-driven car in the world, this landmark automobile predates the Lohner-Porsche by four years and the Toyota Prius by 100 years. Amazing all in attendance as it drove around the grounds, the Armstrong was purchased for $483,400 by renowned Dutch collector Evert Louwman, who indicated it will be proudly displayed at his museum in The Hague, Netherlands for all to enjoy.

Rare Cars Win 2015 Amelia Island Concours …

AMELIA ISLAND, FL, March 15, 2015 — Two presitigious awards, among the top trophies in the collector car hobby, have been awarded here at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours. A 1930 Cord L29 Brooks Stevens Speedster with Woodlites, owned by Ed Schoenthaler of Oak Brook, Illinois, has been awarded the Best of Show Concours D’Elegance for the Amelia Island event. And a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spider, owned by David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California, has won the Best of Show Concours de Sport. These two cars were chosen out of a field of 315 cars from all over the world to be honored as this year’s Best of Show at the 2015 Amerila Island Concours.

Brooks Stevens was a famous designer who hailed from the Milwaukee area in Wisconsin. Although he was one of the great designers of the 20th Century, his work in the automobile industry brought him the most fame. He worked for Studebaker and American Motors during his glory days. But he himself was an avid sports car racer and builder. Stevens was a young man when he bought this 1930 Cord L29 Cabriolet as a new car purchase. After his studies at Cornell University in New York, he decided to rebuild his L29 into a speedster much like the Auburns of that era. The car was entered in road races, hill climbs and rallies. In fact, Stevens loved this car so much that it was still in his collection at his death in 1995. Mr. Schoenthaler purchased the car from the Stevens estate, and put the car through a 2-year detailed restoration. The results are so stunning that it won the prestigious Best of Show Concours D’Elegance here at Amelia Island.

The 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spider (shown above) won the Amelia Island Concours de Sport award as the top two-seater sports car here at the Concours event. The Italian made sports car shows styling by the Zagato design house, and is powered by a 2.3 Liter straight 8 cylinder engine built by Vittorio Jano. The Amelia Island judges noted its outstanding racing history and its impeccable restoration as reasons for its selection as Concours de Sport. Present for the awards ceremony was its current owner, David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California. In 2003 Sydorick bought the vehicle and had Wisconsin-based restorer Rick Bunkfield rebuild the engine.

A gathering of some of the most avid car collectors in the world has convened here at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours. It is one of the world’s most exclusive automotive Concours D’ Elegance. The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is an automotive charitable event held each year during the second weekend in March at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, Florida and along the fairway of the Golf Club of Amelia Island. As a top collector car event it is considered as important as the Pebble Beach Concours, Meadowbrook Concours and the Louis Vuitton Classic in midtown Manhattan.

As the big 2015 Amelia Island week, or as they call it, “March Car Week,” kicked off here, there were several high level collector car auctions to hold everyone’s attention. We watched on Saturday as the RM/Sotheby’s Auction was conducted at the Summer Beach Golf Club of Amelia Island. This is the first auction sale conducted by RM Auctions after being merged with Sotheby’s. It was the mosts successful sale RM has ever had here at Amelia Island with $60.3 million in total sales. RM has been holding an auction at the Amelia Island event for 17 years. They told us that 17 vehicles were sold for seven figure amounts. Here are some of the results:

1960 Ferari 400 sold at the RM/Sotheby Auction at Amelia Island — A 1960 Ferari 400 sold for $5,8 million at the RM/Sotheby Auction at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours. This was the the top price paid in the Saturday auction with the proceeds donated to childrens education. 1995 Ferrari F512 M sells for $410,000 at RM/Sotheby Auction at Amelia Island. — The final Testarossa revision, the 1995 Ferrari 512 M, was very desirable among collectors here at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours. On Saturday we visited the Gooding & Company Auction. For Gooding & Company the results were also spectacular. They told us their total sales for the auction were $26.9 million. According to their numbers, 76 vehicles out of 85 were sold compiling an 89 percent sell through rate. (Gooding & Company allows the consignor to set a reserve value for the sale.) Seven of the vehicles sold went for more than $1 million.

Bonhams’ inaugural Motorcar Auction was held on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club. This is the first year that a Bonhams Auction has been presented at the Amelia Island Concours. Here are the top sales at the auction:
