MONTEREY, CA — While most year’s the big auction sales during Pebble Beach Concours Week save their best cars for last, RM/Sotheby’s brought an imortant collection to their sale on Thursday evening. A packed crowd with every bidder seat filled was on hand for what they called the Pinnacle Collection sale. The two top sales of the week here at Concours Week happened at the RM/Sotheby’s Auction on Thursday. First a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti burst onto the stage to loud applause. When the hammer dropped it had been sold for $17,600,000 (commission included.) The Scaglietti modeled Ferrari had an aluminum block V-12. Later a 1998 McLaren F1 “LM Specification”, one of the most iconic racing McLarens of all time, crossed the block at $13,750,000 with commission.
Saturday night was to be the “big show” for the Pebble Beach Concours Week Auctions with both the RM/Sotheby’s and Mecum Auctions drawing a large number of buyers. The top sale on Saturday was a 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta which sold for $12,000,000 (before commission) at the RM/Sotheby’s Auction. Just as the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance came to an end for another year on Sunday the Gooding & Company Auction began its second session. The top sale of the evening was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider which sold for $15,300,000 before seller’s commission. On Friday evening a black 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible crossed the auction block at the Mecum Auction in Monterey. The official sales price was $2,250,000 before commission. It was the top sale for Mecum that night as the Monterey Auctions were well underway here during Concours Week in the buildup to the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance on Sunday. At the Bonham Auction on Friday the top sale was a 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Cabriolet crossing the block for $2,000,000. The Bonham Auction is a smaller, more intimate setting where the offerings are quite discrete. Here are some of the highlights of the sale:

Concours d’Elegance. Although the Concours is what brings most collectors to the peninsula on the Pacific Ocean this week, a number of top name auction companies are also here to ween buyers for their top collector car offerings.
An estimated 1,100 cars were sold here last year so you can bet there will be lots to see. Photo journalist Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com reported that prices at the Mecum Auction, RM Auction, Gooding & Company and Bonhams Auction were up markedly last year. We counted over 110 cars sold for over seven figures here last year. It was after this show last year that we noticed the collector car market really took off. Prices were escalating on high end classic Ferraris and rare vintage cars, and that trend has carried through to today.

CARMEL, CA — The confetti has flown and this year’s Best of Show at the 2105 Pebble Beach Concours 
d’Elegance has been chosen. In the midst of the tension and excitement here at the Pebble Beach Golf Club, a 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Cabriolet, an elegant gentleman’s sport touring car, has been chosen the Best of Show for this 65th Annual Grand Concours. The proud owners are Jim and Dot Patterson of Louisville, Kentucky.

The Italian made 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Cabriolet was coach built on a 145-in chassis for show competition in the early 1930’s in Europe. It was recently restored to this condition just in time to be shown here at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance.

Well this is the day everybody had been waiting for here on the Monterey Peninsula where the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was held at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Here at the 18th fairway of the famous golf course on the Carmel Bay were gathered some of the finest vintage motorcars of all time. To be considered the Best of Show here at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours is the highest award you can achieve in the collector car hobby.
The afternoon judging at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours was hardly over when the Gooding & Company Auction got into full swing. And they did not disappoint. A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider was the top sale of the night crossing the block for a cool $15,300,000 price tag.

Action was heavy well into the night when a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang was the final sale during the prime time televised portion of Dana Mecum’s 2015 Indy Spring Classic Auction. The Boss 9 was the top sale of the night here in Indianapolis as it sold for $465,000. That was quite a closer for the television viewing audience.

One of the big stories at Dana Mecum’s Indy 2015 Spring Classic Auction revolved around a number of interesting private collections being sold. The one we were focused on was the Larry Gerig Collection which included eight 1958 Fuelie Corvettes each of which had one of the eight standard colors you could have ordered on a Corvette in ’58 … the entire color chart. These special ’58 Corvette Fuelies were all auctioned off in sequence on Saturday (see photos in the slider above.) They say all eight Corvettes have achieved NCRS Top Flight status and are Bloomington Gold certified. All were 4-speeds. Amazing! Then another 1958 Corvette, a one-of-a-kind GM Anniversay Edition, crossed the block on Saturday. It wears its factory original special order Inca Gold color, used to celebrate Chevrolet’s milestone achievement. It was the 39 millionth Chevrolet sold, so they did a special one-off paint job for this car only. (See it in the slider above.)
We were following the auction action in real time here today with Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com feeding us photos and prices as the cars rolled off the auction block. The auction arena was packed with bidders today. The interest in top quality muscle cars was even more intense than usual.

Cars On Line.com newsletter readers will want to know that the Paul Walker ’93 Toyota Supra (from the first Fast and Furious movie) sold for $185,000. The Supra has been fully restored to its glamor movie role condition. Later in the Saturday sale, the Vin Diesel 1970 Dodge Charger from the same Fast and Furious movie sold for $88,000. The Charger was used in the final crash scene of the first movie and was in its unrestored “demolished” condition. The high dollar car sold here at Dana Mecum’s Indy 2015 Spring Classic Auction on Friday night was a real deal 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra from the Don Davis Collection. The Shelby blue big block Cobra went for a cool $ million. The other Cobra, a 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra from the same collection, did not sell when it reached the $1 million mark because the seller would not release his reserve. Another high dollar sale from that collection was a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta which sold for $775,000. One of the premier auctions in the country is Dana Mecum’s Indy 2015 Spring Classic Auction, held every year at this time at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The auction, running May 12-17, 2015, is considered one of the biggest muscle car sales held in the U.S. With recent auction prices trending lower this year, we’ll be interested to watch what prices “blue collar” muscle cars will be drawing at this event. MONTEREY, CA, August 17, 2014 — The Best of Show winner at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance has just been 
announced. It is a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Coupe owned by Jon Shirley of Medina, Washington. As more information becomes available we will have it for you here. Usually the winner of the Best of Show award is a vintage 1930’s motorcar. This is the first Ferrari ever to win the Best of Show at Pebble Beach, America’s most prestigious collector car event. In fact, it is the first post-World War II production car to win the Best of Show award at Pebble Beach since 1968. But as the collector car hobby evolves it is not surprising that the most valuable cars in the hobby, classic Ferraris, are being honored here at the “Super Bowl” of collector car shows. This week a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold here at the Bonhams Auction in Carmel, California for $38.1 million. The high profile auction was held here on the Monterey Penninsula at the Quail Lodge Hotel and Spa. Today we will be concentrating on other high profile auctions to see whether prices on collector car prices will continue to go up during Concours Week.
