2014 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance
2014 Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance Winner …
MONTEREY, CA, August 17, 2014 — The Best of Show winner at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance has just been announced. It is a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Coupe owned by Jon Shirley of Medina, Washington. As more information becomes available we will have it for you here. Usually the winner of the Best of Show award is a vintage 1930’s motorcar. This is the first Ferrari ever to win the Best of Show at Pebble Beach, America’s most prestigious collector car event. In fact, it is the first post-World War II production car to win the Best of Show award at Pebble Beach since 1968. But as the collector car hobby evolves it is not surprising that the most valuable cars in the hobby, classic Ferraris, are being honored here at the “Super Bowl” of collector car shows. Participants garnered points toward the Best of Show award by participating in the Tour D’Elegance this week. We got some video of them coming back to Carmel, California. In reviewing this video we realized we had compiled footage of some very historically significant marques. Click the video window below to see for yourself:
There was some serious money here during Concours Week as five big name auction companies sold top tier collector cars in the shadow of the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. Although the Concours is what brings most collectors to the peninsula on the Pacific Ocean this week, a number of top name auction companies are also here to ween buyers for their top collector car offerings. We counted 105 Ferraris for sale in the auctions during Concours Week activities. Where else in America would you find such a representation of automotive excellence.
This week a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold here at the Bonhams Auction in Carmel, California for $38.1 million. The high profile auction was held here on the Monterey Penninsula at the Quail Lodge Hotel and Spa. Today we will be concentrating on other high profile auctions to see whether prices on collector car prices will continue to go up during Concours Week.
The world’s grandest car event is held here on the 18th hole at the Pebble Beach Golf Course. It is the culmination of a week-long festival of events and collector car auctions like you have never seen before in your life. We’ll attempt to give you a little taste of what this event is like. Follow this page all weekend as we update with photos and fast facts about the auctions and action from Monterey’s weeklong auto extravaganza.
Photo-journalist Bob Boberg of eClassic Autos.com will be capturing the event in photographs for you. An estimated 1,100 cars were sold here last year so you can bet there will be lots to see. Bob reported that prices at the Mecum Auction, RM Auction, Gooding & Company and Bonhams Auction were up markedly last year. A record sale saw a 1967 Ferrari 275 NART Spider sell for $25 million (see story below.) The RM Auction where this sale took place records the sale as $27.5 million with their sales commission included. We counted over 110 cars sold for over seven figures here last year.
It was after this show last year that we noticed the collector car market really took off. Prices were escalating on high end classic Ferraris and rare vintage cars and that trend has carried through to today. What will happen this year at Monterey. We’ll know very soon. Stay tuned to this page for all the relavant news.
