Corvettes at Carlisle 2013
Carlisle, PA– The Carlisle Fairgrounds were filled with some of the choicest Corvettes in the country this last weekend as part of the Corvettes at Carlisle event. Spokesman, Mike Garland estimated that as many as 60,000 individual attendees walked the fields in honor of Corvette’s 60th Anniversary. With 5,000 unique Corvettes from all generations on display, it’s touted as one of the largest single-brand car shows in the world, and is quickly becoming the place to be mid-summer for any serious Corvette guru.
Each year features a special display, and this year’s was aptly titled the “Chips Choice Display,”where some of the best 1963 Corvette models took the stage. Among them were a 1963 Corvette Corvettes-at-CarlisleRondine concept car and a 1963 Asteroid Corvette (both pictured below). Classic models weren’t the only Corvettes represented. Corvette paraded a 2014 Stingray that hasn’t even entered into production yet! Legendary racer and creator of the Yenko Camaro, Don Yenko drove this 1963 Corvette Race Car.
Speedboat racer Bob Nosrdskog special ordered this 1963 Corvette, without the paint, and then shipped it to prolific customizer, George Barris. Barris’ modifications included extending the nose cone, creating custom headers that exited from behind the front wheels, removal of the split window and opened rear wheel wells. It was dubbed “The Asteroid.”
The 1963 Rondine Concept Corvette was built for the Paris Auto Show in 1963 and then remain on display until 2008. It was then sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for $1.6 million! It’s based on the 1963 Corvette C2 chassis, has a classic Pininfarina body and is the only steel-bodied Corvette ever created!
Built by legendary pro-streeter, Rod Saboury, this 1963 Twin Trubo Drag Car shouldn’t be a stranger to readers of the Cars On Line newsletter, where we featured it as our 2012 Car of the Year. A better suspension and multi-segment lined brakes were made available for the 1963 Z06 Corvette. The Z06 is seeing a revival today, but only a couple hundred were made in their innaugeral year.
Dick Lang’s 1963 Z06 Tanker Race Car made an appearance.
An original 1967 Corvette Grand Sport II L88 is a million dollar car, but these continuations are still being manufactured today.
