Catchin’ the Wavecrest Woodie Show …
ENCINITAS, CA — September 21, 2014 — It was a fitting final event to a truly incredible Wavecrest Woodie Show when classic woodies cruised from Encinitas to Oceanside, California this morning for the ritual final day cruise. This was the way we wrapped up our coverage of the 35th Annual Wavecrest Woodie Show. It was a site that entertained onlookers here in Encinitas as they “uuwhed” and “aahed” over the site of so many classic woodies parading down the history California Hwy. 101 which runs along the the Pacific coastline. It is a site to behold and a heart pumping experience to be a part of.
The Wavecrest Woodie Show is billed as the largest all-woodie event in the world. It is held at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas just off historic California Hwy 101. This weekend was all about classic woodies, surfing and the comraderie of the woodie brotherhood. Woodie restorers are a special breed of car guys. Not only do they have to be well schooled in auto mechanics, but also have experience in wood finishing. Lots of stories and restoration tips were being swapped here this weekend. Sunday was the final day of the show and a ritual for the San Diego Woodie Club that sponsors this show. Each year they cruise the 25-mile stretch between Encinitas and Oceanside creating the longest line of woodies on parade that you will see anywhere. According to one of the founders, the Wavecrest Woodie Show started out as a surf contest on the beach in back of the Wavecrest Hotel in Encinitas. A few woodie wagons began showing up and it turned into a surfing and woodie show, sort of a California cultural phenomenon. A few years later the Wavecrest Hotel burned down and for a short time the woodie show was held at Oceanside just north of Encinitas. Now the Wavecrest Woodie Show is back in Encinitas where it has become the largest event in the world for wood-bodied classics, in essence a woodie reunion. We call it the Woodie Homecoming because wood bodied cars and surfing at Moonlight Beach have become synonymous. The event is sponsored by the San Diego Woodie Club.
Saturday was the big day of the event when close to 300 classic wood-bodied vehicles gathered here in Encinitas at Moonlight Beach for the 35th Annual edition of this storied event. It’s always fun to catch the expressions on the faces of people who are here at the Wavecrest Woodie Show for the first time. This year woodie vehicles packed every corner of the area cordoned off for the show and spilled over into the surrounding street. We got some great photos. Click here to see our gallery of woodies.
This year we were fortunate enough to cover the whole weekend of fun. Check our Facebook and Twitter posts as we catch up with woodie wagons and their owners. You’ll get a first-hand look at this historic event right here.
