Wavecrest Woodie Show 2018 Sunday

Although the Wavecrest Woodie Show 2018 ended on Saturday, the big fun for woodie owners is just beginning here in Encinitas this morning. At 8 AM the cruise to Oceanside begins at the Encinitas City Hall. You have to witness this to get the excitement of seeing fifty old wood-bodied cars cruising along historic Hwy 101, skirting Pacific beaches all along the way. The 25-mile cruise is a great opportunity to see these cars in action. Here is how it looked under the pier at Oceanside this morning:

The Wavecrest Woodie Show 2018 opened Saturday morning to clear skies and brilliant California sun. It is the San Diego Woodie Club’s big event here on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, California. What a day for a car show. And, man, is this a special car show. It’s always great to watch spectators who have never been to the Wavecrest Woodie Show before. They can’t help smiling from ear to ear as they “ooooh” and “awww” over every car they see. To see this many woodies all in one place is amazing.

Oldest car here at the Wavecrest Woodie Show 2018

The 39th Annual Wavecrest Woodie Show 2018 is one of the world’s largest All-Woodie Homecomings. It is just simply jaw dropping to see so many wood-bodied vehicles on display. Look around and you realize woodie passenger wagons were produced from the 1910’s through the early 1950’s. They are a part of Califonia’s culture because they were the preferred transportation for surfers over the years. Not only were they relatively inexpensive in the 1950’s and 1960’s, but they could easily carry a longboard on the roof. So the San Diego Woodie Club observes the lifestyle and the woodie car culture every year at the Wavecrest show.

It is one really laid back party on Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm. They announced that 195 woodies were registered and on display here on Moonlight Beach.

This is one car show that should be on every collector’s bucket list. It takes a full day for us to cover the entire show. We met some real characters, as you can imagine, and swapped stories with some of the most knowledgable car people on the planet.

Rarest of the Rare Woodie Wagons …

ENCINITAS, CA, September 22, 2015 — As we wrap up our coverage of the incredible Wavecrest Woodie Show 2015 we would be remiss if we did not point out some of the rarest Classic Woodie Wagons we saw here at Moonlight Beach. Every woodie wagon that still exists today is a dream car. But here are the rarest among the almost 300 woodie wagons that came to the Woodie Reunion here at Wavecrest 2015.

We ran into the owner of this 1942 Ford Super Deluxe Marmon-Herrington 4X4 Woodie Wagon while we were doing a Periscope broadcast for our Twitter followers. Terry O’Connor of Santa Cruz, California had just finished his ’42 and this was the first time he had it at the Wavecrest Woodie Show. It was quite a hit. Terry told us it was the only Marmon-Herrington 4-wheel-drive conversion done on a woodie wagon in 1942 with just two months of production that year before the Ford plant was shut down and retooled to produce war vehicles. It lived in Alamogordo, New Mexico for most of its life. Terry said he bought the body, what was left of it, from a scrap yard in Phoenix, Arizona.

While we were shooting a Pericsope video for our Twitter fans I asked a Ford woodie owner to tell me how you could identify a ’49 from a ’50 or ’51 Ford. While he was explaining the differences in the grilles for the three years, we noticed that his 1949 Ford Woodie Wagon was actually a sedan delivery. So we asked him whether it was an original. “Yeh, this is the only one,” he told us with a grin. “Only one what,” we sort of blurted out. “This is the only one they made from the factory. Somebody ordered it this way in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is the only one Ford ever made.” We’ll try to get that video for you later. What a find!

1947 Mercury Marmon-Herrington 4X4 conversion, one of only five built

Cars On Line.com readers will remember this 1947 Mercury Marmon-Herrington All-Weel-Drive Woodie Wagon owned by Dave Holmes of San Clemente, California. It has been featured several times in our newsletter and in our ClassiCarNews.com blog. It is a regular fixture at California Woodie Car Shows and has been featured in major magazines. It is one of only five built in 1947 by Marmon-Herrington. But it was further specially modified by Coachcraft, Ltd out of Hollywood, California as a camper wagon for noted bird photographer Don Bleitz. Bleitz used this camper vehicle on rough-terrain trips throught the southwestern U.S.

The 1953 Desoto Hilo Sampan Surrey Bus represents the many 15-22 passenger “sampans” which were modified to create sight seeing transportation on the “Big Island” of Hawaii. These jitneys were used to provide transportation to airports and trains stations and were often used for sight seeing. They were often seen with surf boards on top as transportation to the beach. This tradition was started in Hilo in 1922 and by 1962 there were 200 of them on the island. When Ford and Chevy began building buses, this tradition began to die out.

The 1952 English Ford V8 Pilot Woodie Station Wagon was built in England for export. It was brought to the Wavecrest Woodie Show by Art Bjornestad. It is one of two known to exist here in the United States. Only a handful are known throughout the world including one at Her Majesty the Queen’s home in Sandringham, United Kingdom.

1938 Pontiac Woodie Station Wagon, one of only 4 left

The 1938 Pontiac Woodie Station Wagon is one of only four left in existence with a Straight 8 and the sidemounts. It was used by a well known surveyor from Long Beach, California during the 1930’s.

The 1936 DodgeD2 Woodie Wagon was brought to the Wavecrest Woodie Show by Rick Thomas of New Bronfels, Texas.

ENCINITAS, CA — September 20, 2015 — Here is the video you’ve been waiting for. We caught this footage this morning at the Wavecrest Woodie Show 2015 Cruise to Oceanside. More fun in the California sun. Lots of footage of woodies on the beach, blessed with Pacific Coast atmosphere. Take a look:

Otis should have been singing “Under the Boardwalk” in the background as a huge contingent of woodie wagons from the Wavecrest Woodie Show 2015 made the trip from Encinitas to the harbor at Oceanside this morning. There was a photo session near the pier (boardwalk). The final cruise of the weekend was the scenic run from the Civic Center in Enci

nitas down the Historic Hwy 101 along the Pacific Coast through Carlsbad and then to the pier in Oceanside. It was a sight … more an inspirational ritual, as the woodies returned to the beach where the surf and surfing were its origins. What could be a more fitting finale for an incredible weekend here at the Wavecrest Woodie Show 2015.

The Sunday morning memorial cruise down the historic Hwy 101 from Encinitas to Oceanside is the last event of the Wavecrest Woodie Show 2015. It is one of the cherished events of this Woodie Reunion as all woodie owners are invited to join the ritual cruise. They congregate at the Pier in Oceanside where surfers were catching waves in the background. Many of the owners and their woodies began their trek home after this event. Until next year then.

It is just simply jaw dropping to see nearly 300 woodie wagons all at one show. Spectators were amazed to see so many different makes and models of wood-structured vehicles at the 36th Annual Wavecrest Woodie Show 2015 on Saturday. The National Woodie Club tells us that there are close to 300 woodie wagons assembled here in the show area at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. With surfers in the background, the breeze off the ocean kept us cool in the morning as the afternoon sun bounced its rays off the beautiful wood bodied wagons. And everyone is in agreement that this years show has drawn a very discrete selection of woodies, maybe the best ever for the world’s largest woodie show.

Hundreds of woodies were on display by proud owners from all over he country. Every one of them is a head turner. But when you see them here all together for the Woodie Reunion in Encinitas, this is an event that transcends generations. Everybody who sees it knows they are witnessing something special. Thursday was the prelude to the big Woodie Homecoming show sponsored by the San Diego Woodies here in downtown Encinitas as the woodie crowd mixed with local car collectors for a huge display on Main Street. There is a lot of history behind this show. It is billed as the largest purely wood-bodied car show in the world. Stay tuned to this page to get your “Woodie fix” and see through our camera’s eye the historic Woodie Homecoming here in Encinitas.

It’s always fun to catch the expressions on the faces of people who are here at the Wavecrest Woodie Show for the first time. They just can’t believe it when they see it. This is the most amazing display of wooden structured cars you will ever witness.

According to one of the founders, the Wavecrest Woodie Show started out as a surfing contest on the beach in back of the Wavecrest Hotel on Moonlight Beach. A few woodie wagons began showing up and it turned into a surfing and woodie show, sort of a California cultural phenomenon. A few years later the Wavecrest Hotel burned down and for a short time the woodie show was held at Oceanside just north of Encinitas. Now the Wavecrest Woodie Show is back in Encinitas where it has become the largest event in the world for wood-bodied classics, in essence a woodie reunion. We call it the Woodie Homecoming because wood bodied cars and surfing at Moonlight Beach have become synonymous. The event is sponsored by the San Diego Woodie Club.

The Wavecrest Woodie Show is billed as the largest all-woodie event in the world. It is held at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas just off historic California Hwy 101. It is about classic woodies, surfing and the comraderie of the woodie brotherhood. Woodie restorers are a special breed of car guys. Not only do they have to be well schooled in auto mechanics, but also have experience in wood finishing. Lots of stories and restoration tips will be swapped here this year.
